The Ayrton light is located at the very top of the Clock Tower, when lit it indicates that either House is sitting.
Installed in 1885 the light was named after A.S. Ayrton MP, the first Commissioner of Works. Originally lit by gas and only visible towards West London (Buckingham Palace side). The current light dates from 1892/93. Electric lights were introduced in 1903.
