The first elections for a new Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales were held on 6 May 1999 following referendums in 1998. On 1 July 1999 these two bodies began sitting and those powers which were the responsibility of the two bodies were formally transferred. Many matters remained with the UK Parliament, however, and the House of Commons retains the right to discuss Scottish and Welsh business.
