Adam Dant was commissioned as the official 2015 General Election Artist by the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art. Known for his large narrative ink drawings which approach British culture, politics and ideology with a rich vein of satire, he was selected from a shortlist of artists to produce a work based on his unique experience of the campaign trail.
During the campaign period Adam Dant travelled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom observing electioneering activities of all the main political parties. Equipped with a sketchbook and chinagraph pencil throughout his journey, he filled over two dozen sketchbooks with ‘lightning sketches’ and visual notes which were later used to inform the final art work.
Adam’s commission has resulted in a single monumental drawing which he describes as an ‘encyclopaedic compendium’ of events from the campaign period.
‘The Government Stable’ provides a narrative of the campaign trail in the run up to polling day. The ‘stable’ in the drawings title is a fictitious space which serves as a national ‘General Election Campaign Archive’ and allows for a coherent and collective descriptive view of this national historical occasion.
